Since he was a child, John Pepin has enjoyed writing and reading. The various forms of writing communication have intrigued him. He actively listens and watches for how communications – whether in advertisements, television and movie scripts, radio content, and numerous forms of journalistic endeavors – are constructed. He emulates some styles, while following his own path, breaking writing and creation “rules” to find new variations to and diversions from these traditional ideas.

After selling a college homework assignment to a local California newspaper for his first paid writing credit, he began writing for several publications as a freelance writer, focusing on outdoor and historical topics. Among these publications were Bird Watcher’s Digest, Snowmobile, The Pasadena Star-News, National Parks, Wildbird, and The Timber Producer.

He began writing for The Mining Journal in 1994. During his tenure at the newspaper, Pepin received numerous awards for his writing and photography from the Associated Press and Michigan Press Association. He was honored in the categories of straight news story, spot or breaking news, sustained coverage of a single news event, and features. In 2007, he won Michigan awards as Sierra Club Environmental Journalist of the Year, and in August of that year, Associated Press Photo of the Month. In 1999, he won a first-place award from the Michigan Press Association for spot news photo.

He began writing his popular weekly Outdoors North column for the Michigan Department of Natural Resources in the fall of 2016. Beyond this, he has researched and compiled enough materials for several books.
